SCAPEGOAT – SINS BORNE BY
Scriptures are cited from the King James (Authorized) Version, unless stated otherwise.
Question: What sins were borne by the antitypical Scapegoat (Leviticus 16: 10)?
Answer: Leviticus 16: 10 reads, “But the goat, on which the lot fell to be the scapegoat, shall be presented alive before the LORD, to make an atonement with him, and to let him go for a scapegoat into the wilderness.”
The merit of the death of Christ, which will ultimately be applied for the sins of the world, will cover the portion of their sins that belonged to Adamic weakness or heredity. But the willful portion of their sins would not be covered by Christ’s merit. Therefore, a certain amount of obligation would continue to attach to them. Additionally, during the Gospel Age anyone who was guilty of the death or the persecution of one of God’s saints brought himself under special obligation and responsibility (Revelation 6: 9, 10).
Justice will be satisfied by Jesus’ merit for all claims that would come under the head of Adamic condemnation and weakness. But how will Justice be satisfied for the willful sins of the world, especially those special trespasses against the Body of Christ? We answer, in the extreme end of this Age there has been a spirit begotten class – the Great Company, the antitypical Scapegoat class – who failed to carry out their sacrifice faithfully. But instead of being cast into the Second Death, God has allowed them to complete their death. And since their death is not applied in the sacrificial sense, as was the case with the Church, God arranged for the suffering and death of the Great Company to be applied in a substitutionary manner for the willful sins of the world, especially the special transgressions against the Church. Thus the accounts of Justice will be squared.
In the Millennium men will suffer corrective stripes in order to reform bad character developed in this life. But the purpose of those stripes will not be to satisfy Justice, but for reformation.
